What might become possible if you could tap into your intuition?
I came across this Albert Einstein quote a couple of days ago and it really resonated with me. Talk of intuition is so often disregarded as woo-woo nonsense – and yet we are tapping into it all the time – if I had a pound for every time a coaching client said to me “my gut feeling is…”, “in my heart of hearts I know…” I’d have my feet up in Barbados by now.
And yet this valuable information is so often ignored in favour of the rational, head based wisdom. The longer I do the work I do - both with my coaching clients and in my own personal development – the more I’ve come to believe that there is so much untapped wisdom not just in our brains but in our bodies and, dare I say it, souls. Science tells us that we have do actually have neurons in our hearts and stomachs so it isn’t really that far-fetched – it turns our guts really do have feeling after all.
The problem, I guess, is in the seemingly intangible nature of intuition. It’s hard to scientifically prove, which is probably why intellectual wisdom has the upper hand. And yet I can’t help feeling like we are really missing out on a rich source of information if only we can find a way to tune into it. I have come to believe that there are little intuitive signals all the time if only we can begin to notice them. To me it feels like there is something important in pausing and being curious so as to allow intuition to emerge – a little like coaxing a timid animal out from it’s hiding place.
Unfortunately busy, chatty minds aren’t really conducive to allowing us to listen in to different sorts of inner wisdom and insight. You may be familiar with the experience of a left-field thought popping up while you are in the shower or maybe while you are out on a run. It’s as if the rational mind needs to be occupied elsewhere for other types of “knowing” to find a space to emerge.
I’m really intrigued and the excited by the possibility of tuning in to my intuition more. For me a combination of dynamic movement, breath work and visualisation drawn from a methodology called Sophrology (that I’ve recently trained in) allows my rational mind to chill out a little so that I can listen in to what other parts of me have to say.
So why does any of this matter?
As a coach being able to listen with my whole self (not just my rational brain) enables me to be even more useful to me clients; the same is true when working with groups. But this is also about tapping into all the inner resources that I have available to me and inviting my clients to do the same – to tune into their untapped wisdom, to lead themselves and others well and to live rich, fulfilling lives.
So - bring on the woo-woo! 😀
P.S I wonder if there are particular things that help you to tune into your intuition? I’d love to hear about them.
